Dolly Parton: The Sparkle That Saved Me

A Crystal Creates Magic inspiration story
August may belong to Madonna, but my heart has always had a Dolly‑shaped doorway in it — the first icon who taught me what it meant to shine. And this blog is for her. For the woman who changed my life without ever knowing my name.
The Sparkle I Didn’t Grow Up With
My childhood wasn’t glitter, neon, sequins, or pop‑art color. It wasn’t the world you see in my art today. But somewhere in the middle of that childhood, a woman I had never met cracked open a window and let the sparkle in.
Her name was Dolly Parton.
Dolly was bigger than life — hair, voice, humor, heart — and she made me believe I could be bigger in life too. She made it okay to be femme, to be loud, to be joyful, to be theatrical, to be me.
Living‑Room Concerts & a Fake Microphone
When I was little, I used to put on concerts in my living room in front of the fireplace. I’d stuff my shirt to mimic Dolly’s iconic figure, throw on a wig, grab a fake mic, and perform her songs like the world was watching.
Honestly, this is probably why I love karaoke today — I feel like I invented it.
I have no singing voice.
But I am loud.
And I am magical when I sing.
And that magic?
It’s because of Dolly.
The Permission to Be Big, Bold, and Beautiful
Dolly taught me that being femme wasn’t something to hide — it was something to celebrate. She showed me that glitter isn’t frivolous, it’s armor. That sequins aren’t silly, they’re sacred. That fashion is storytelling. That queerness is joy. That being “too much” is actually being just right.
She taught me to embrace people for all that they are — every perfectly perfect imperfection, every original thought, every wild dream. She taught me to live in the world I want to be in, not the one I was handed.
She taught me to choose myself.
The Dolly Blueprint
I didn’t know Dolly personally, but I knew her as the blueprint for how to be myself. She showed me how to find joy even when joy felt lost. How to find beauty in myself even when the world didn’t hand it to me. How to love loudly, laugh loudly, dress loudly, and live loudly.
And because of her, I built a life filled with love and color — my wife Hazel, my cat Maple, my bestie, and the family we’ve created. I truly believe Dolly helped guide me here.
The Heartbreak & The Legacy
My heart breaks knowing she’s no longer with us in a physical sense. But Dolly’s impact is eternal. Her love, her confidence, her humor, her generosity — they ripple across the world and across generations.
She didn’t have to stand next to me for me to feel her pride.
She didn’t have to know me for me to feel her love.
She didn’t have to see my art for me to know she’d cheer for it.
Dolly Parton changed my life.
And her sparkle will never fade from my heart.
