Frida Kahlo: The July Flame

A Crystal Creates Magic inspiration story
July is a month of fire — color, emotion, identity, and becoming. It’s the month I celebrate my own birthday on July 2, and it’s the month we honor one of the greatest artistic forces of all time: Frida Kahlo, born July 6.
Two Mexican women, two July birthdays, two lives shaped by art, resilience, and unapologetic self‑expression. Maybe that’s why I’ve always felt her in my bones.

My Mexican Heritage & Frida’s Echo
My connection to Frida isn’t just artistic — it’s ancestral. As a Mexican woman, her aesthetic feels like home. The textiles, the embroidery, the flowers, the silhouettes, the symbolism… it’s the visual language of my heritage.
Frida didn’t wear fashion; she wore identity.
She wore rebellion.
She wore Mexico.
And when I create — when I lean into saturated palettes, bold lines, pop‑art color explosions — I feel like I’m speaking the same cultural dialect she did. Her world reminds me that art is not just something you make; it’s something you live.
The Day I Saw Her World Up Close
Last year, Hazel and I went to the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the Portland Art Museum, and I cried. I didn’t expect to. But the moment I stepped into her world — the fabrics, the jewelry, the photographs, the paintings — I felt overwhelmed.
It was like walking into my own cultural memory.
Her fashion was breathtaking.
Her tenacity was palpable.
Her artistry was undeniable.
I cried because her world felt familiar.
I cried because her strength felt personal.
I cried because I saw myself in her — in her color, her courage, her contradictions.

Frida’s Tenacity, Her Boldness, Her Becoming
Frida lived boldly, even when life tried to break her. She loved passionately, created relentlessly, and chose herself again and again. Even when she was overshadowed by Diego Rivera, she grew brighter — more famous, more daring, more unforgettable.
That’s the part of her story that hits me hardest.
Her ability to:
- love deeply
- hurt openly
- create fiercely
- and still choose herself
That’s the kind of badass energy I want in my own life and art.
That’s the kind of muse who belongs in July — our month.
Why Frida Lives Inside My Work
Crystal Creates Magic is built on:
- bold color
- emotional storytelling
- feminist fire
- queer joy
- cultural pride
- pop‑art rebellion
Frida Kahlo is all of that — and more.
She reminds me that art is not about perfection; it’s about presence.
It’s about telling the truth, even when it’s messy.
It’s about wearing your identity loudly, beautifully, unapologetically.
She inspires me to create from the gut, not the surface.
To honor my heritage.
To embrace my contradictions.
To be bold in color and bolder in feeling.

July’s Muse, Forever
So yes — July belongs to Frida.
To her birthday.
To her legacy.
To her fire.
To her world that continues to shape mine.
And this month’s blog is a love letter to her — and to the shared July energy that connects us. Two Mexican women born under the same summer sun, both choosing art, identity, and self‑expression as our loudest, brightest forms of truth.
