Rocky Horror & Tim Curry: The October Spark That Lit My Queer Heart
Share
A Crystal Creates Magic inspiration story
October deserves an entrance.
A curtain‑pull.
A spotlight.
A little chaos.
A little glitter.
A lot of queer magic.
And nothing — nothing — kicks off spooky season like Rocky Horror Picture Show and the incomparable Tim Curry.

My First Time: Drag + Midnight Madness
My earliest memory of Rocky Horror is stitched right into my senior year of high school. My best friend took me to my first drag show and then straight to a midnight screening of Rocky Horror — all in one night.
Maybe the drag show was a test to see if I could hang at Rocky.
Maybe it was fate.
Either way, I was hooked from the first moment a queen stepped on stage.
I grew up in a small town, and let’s be honest — my queer heart beat true long before I understood it. I didn’t know why I hated my best friend’s boyfriend. I didn’t know why I felt different. I didn’t have the language yet.
But that night?
Drag + Rocky Horror?
It cracked my heart wide open.
Costumes, Theater, and Becoming Janet
I had never seen Rocky Horror before that night, so of course I had to research what to wear. I was supposed to dress like Janet — and honestly, the costumes were what excited me most.
Costumes were always my escape hatch.
Costumes were why I moved to New York.
Costumes are why Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday.
Costumes are why Crystal Creates Magic exists today.
Rocky Horror wasn’t just a movie — it was a theatrical permission slip. A place where weirdos, queers, misfits, and magic‑makers gathered in the dark to celebrate being exactly who they were.
And I was one of them.
Tim Curry: The Reveal That Changed Everything
Tim Curry’s performance as Dr. Frank‑N‑Furter is one of the most iconic moments in film history. The elevator reveal — the corset, the pearls, the smirk — and then that line:
“Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
Lyrics to live by.
A mantra for every queer kid who ever felt too strange, too loud, too colorful, too much.
Tim Curry wasn’t just acting.
He was embodying freedom.
He was giving us permission to be ourselves — fully, fiercely, fabulously.
Rocky Horror Across My Life
I’ve seen Rocky Horror more times than I can count — in theaters, at parties, with friends, with strangers, with full casts acting it out in front of the screen.
One of my favorite memories is seeing a performance at the fairgrounds in Flagstaff with a dear friend. He wore my corset. We sang so loud. We were alive in that way only Rocky Horror can make you feel alive.
It’s not just a movie.
It’s a ritual.
A queer baptism.
A celebration of the strange.
Tim Curry’s Passing & The Legacy of Queer Freedom
With Tim Curry’s recent passing, it’s hard to imagine a world without the man who embodied so much queer joy, acceptance, and theatrical brilliance.
But here’s the truth:
His impact didn’t die.
His magic didn’t fade.
His legacy didn’t dim.
If anything, it’s more important than ever to embrace art, embrace the strange, live with curiosity, and celebrate the glorious weirdos who make life worth living.
Tim Curry will forever be a symbol of queer freedom — the freedom to be ourselves, to dress up, to sing loudly, to dance badly, to love boldly, to live theatrically.

Happy Halloween, Freaks & Geeks
So here’s to October.
Here’s to Rocky Horror.
Here’s to Tim Curry.
Here’s to drag queens and midnight movies and small‑town queer kids finding their way.
Here’s to costumes and corsets and chaos and community.
And here’s to all my freaks and geeks out there —
Happy Halloween. Stay strange. Stay magical. Stay you.
